The Mayor of Vilnius thinks that improvements in public transport and education are turning the capital of Lithuania into an attractive 21st century city, Vilnius City Municipality has informed.

The Mayor of Vilnius thinks that improvements in public transport and education are turning the capital of Lithuania into an attractive 21st century city, Vilnius City Municipality has informed.

“As a city Vilnius is fast in providing services for investors,” Artūras Zuokas explained in an exclusive video interview to the Information Daily.

“The 21st century will be the century of cities, and more and more people prefer to live in urbanised territories because there are services that they need, as well as labour possibilities,” he said, adding that “Vilnius is not an exception”.

According to Zuokas, the number of citizens in the city is growing year-on-year.

Speaking about transport, the mayor said that Vilnius has prioritised public transport and implemented special bus lanes, reasonable ticket prices, and a popular bike sharing system.

In the near future, the city would like to build a new municipality, with some private investors, to provide new houses for long-term rental.

“We are very open and many students are coming here to study,” Zuokas said.

Speaking on Lithuania’s economic future, he said: “We would like to join the eurozone in 2015 but, being a member of the European Union, we have freedom of movement and knowledge of other European countries”.
