Polish border guards detained nine people, including two Lithuanian citizens, on Friday on suspicion of smuggling cigarettes from Belarus into Poland using weather balloons.
During the operation, authorities seized more than 3,900 cartons of cigarettes with a total value of more than 621,000 Polish zloty (over 143,000 euros). The detained suspects also include three Polish and four Belarusian nationals.
The border guard service said the investigation was ongoing to identify other people involved in the criminal activity.
So far this year, Polish Border Guard officials have detained 40 people suspected of smuggling cigarettes from Belarus into Poland using weather balloons.
