The US Senate has confirmed Melissa Argyros as the next US ambassador to Latvia, according to information published on the Senate’s website.

Argyros does not have any prior diplomatic experience. US media have reported that she donated $2 million to President Donald Trump’s election campaign.

Argyros is a real estate investor from California. She has held several positions at the Argyros family company, Arnel & Affiliates, including serving as a vice president.

She is also a co-CEO and co-chair of the board of the Argyros Family Foundation, whose mission focuses on supporting children, education, health care, scholarships and the arts.

Argyros earned a bachelor’s degree in the humanities from Chapman University in Orange, California, in 2007.

The United States regularly appoints political donors alongside career diplomats to ambassadorial posts.
