Tour operator moves Egypt flights from Vilnius to Kaunas amid balloon disruptions

Lithuanian tour operator Join UP! Baltic will move its charter flights to Egypt from Vilnius to Kaunas starting December 17, citing disruptions caused by balloons launched from Belarus.

Flights to Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada will operate from Kaunas Airport through the end of March 2026, Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) said in a press release.

The move is intended to reduce passenger inconvenience caused by nighttime flight cancellations due to the balloon threat. LTOU said preparations for the transfer are underway and that airport fees for the flights will be discounted.

Earlier this month, Finnish flag carrier Finnair cancelled an evening flight between Helsinki and Vilnius because of balloon disruptions, while Latvian airline airBaltic moved up the departure times of two flights starting November 20.

A senior official at Flydubai, which is launching flights from Dubai to Vilnius, said the airline could reroute aircraft to Riga – where it already operates – if balloon activity again affects operations at Vilnius Airport.
