Foreign Minister stressed the importance of democracy and equal opportunities

At a special UN event to follow up efforts made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals on 25 September in New York, the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius noted that there was a need for innovative use of public, private, local and international resources, engaging governments, the private sector and civil society in the process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania reports. 

At a special UN event to follow up efforts made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals on 25 September in New York, the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius noted that there was a need for innovative use of public, private, local and international resources, engaging governments, the private sector and civil society in the process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania reports.

The Foreign Minister stressed that science, technology and innovations were important in implementation of Development Agenda for the future. According to Linkevičius, the current Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council aims to ensure that the post-2015 Development Agenda should be based on the principles of democracy, equal opportunities, good governance, rule of law, and accountability. Special attention must be given to peace and security.

The Lithuanian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of a transitional period. “Lithuania has quite recently implemented its main economic, social and institutional reforms. This experience is a valuable source of ideas and knowledge. So we are ready to share it with any other country or civil society,” Linkevičius said.

Heads of state attending the special event discussed implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, shared their thoughts about the post-2015 Development Agenda.
