The conference ‘Unifying Diversity: languages and mobility, work and active public spirit’ will be held in Vilnius on 25–26 September, 2013 to mark the European Day of Languages and the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), writes www.eu2013.lt.

The conference is being organised by the European Commission (EC), the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language, and the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Vilnius University. The patron of the event is Androulla Vassiliou, a member of the European Commission.

During the conference, a number of topics will be discussed, including measures to protect the variety of European languages and cultures, the development and creation of new digital resources and language technologies, the developing of language industries, language learning using the most modern methods, and how to improve the exchange of information in all European languages.

The conference will be attended by more than 340 specialists of various fields (scientists, translators, teachers, journalists, lawyers, writers, language technologists, business representatives, politicians) from all European countries. Presentations will be delivered by the Director-General of the Directorate General for Education and Culture European Commission Jan Truszczynski, Head of the General Directorate for Interpretation Marco Benedetti, and Head of the General Directorate for Translation Rytis Martikonis.

The conference is said to be very important for the Lithuanian language since the ideas of multilingualism are of two directions: they encourage the knowledge of a variety of languages and cultures along with the learning of languages as well as supporting democratic expression of every citizen of the EU and communication in their native language, coupled with the search for the most suitable ways to spread one’s own language and culture in the European arena.

Over 200 participants from Lithuania have been invited to the conference. The writer Dalia Staponkutė, singers Rasa Bubulytė and Viktoras Diawara, and modern pentathlete Edvinas Krungolcas will share their multilingual experience together with scientists, translators, teachers, journalists, and lawyers.

The Head of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, Jolanta Zabarksiatė and the Rector of Kazimieras Simonavičius University, Arūnas Augustinaitis, will present a new approach to languages as to the most important factors in improving Europe’s competitiveness and the base for smart specialisation and will present the need for other linguistic professions, e.g. the language coach, language manager, etc.

The Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Vilnius University, Nijolė Maskaliūnienė will talk about the newest challenges in the preparation of translators in Lithuania, and the Head of the Centre of Terminology at the Institute of the Lithuanian language and Head of INFOTERM Albina Auksoriūtė will make a presentation on the changes of Lithuanian language terminology during the past decade following Lithuania’s entry into the European Union.

The participants of the conference will make reference to a new approach provided by scientists and discuss the changing role of the European languages while striving for economic effectiveness, the development of work organisation and synergy of multilingualism.

The participants of the conference plan to formulate a few strategic recommendations.
