On Thursday evening, the MO Museum in Vilnius opened GamePlay, the first exhibition in Lithuania dedicated to video games. It is only the first MO exhibition where visitors can interactively experience each installation.

GamePlay is an adaptation of zkm_gameplay. The Next Level, an exhibition developed by the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM) in Germany. According to a press release from MO Museum, GamePlay features video games by 22 independent developers and artists, combining various art forms and challenging established industry norms.

The exhibition is divided into three main sections: games addressing pressing social and political issues; games pushing the boundaries of creativity and aesthetics; and games that foster empathy through personal storytelling.

“Video games are one of today’s most influential media. Since emerging 70 years ago, they have become firmly rooted in pop culture, entertainment and art, playing a vital role in many areas of contemporary life,” said curator Agnė Kuprytė.

“Nevertheless, the notion that video games are merely a simple form of leisure persists,” she added. “This is precisely the perception we aim to challenge with the exhibition – by revealing the potential of games to drive social change and offer new tools for understanding the world and one another.”

GamePlay will run until November 16.
