The Lithuanian Post is issuing a stamp that pays tribute to the national dish cepelinai.
The design is by the artist Darja Podlužna.
The stamp has a denomination of 2.05 euros and a print run of 30,000 pieces, the state-run postal company said.
The stamp with a serving of cepelinai is the fifth one dedicated to Lithuania’s culinary heritage. In 2023, a stamp with šakotis was presented, and before that with šaltibarščiai, cottage cheese, and cucumbers with honey.
According to the Lithuanian Post, cepelinai entered the national cuisine over a hundred years ago, probably from the German-speaking Lithuania Minor and through Jewish communities that had close ties with other Jewish communities in northern Germany.
The dish takes its name from its similarity in shape to the airship zeppelin designed by the German general Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
Since 2014, the World Cepelinai Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of February, initiated by Lithuanian-American Jonas Vaičiūnas.
The Lithuanian Post issues 15–20 stamps every year. The themes on the stamps are approved by the Postal Stamp Issuing Commission.
