The captain of Ruby, currently moored off the coast of Norway and carrying about 20,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, would like to carry out repairs on his cargo ship in Lithuania’s Klaipėda Port.

Algis Latakas, head of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, confirmed this to LRT.lt.

“The ship, flying the Maltese flag and carrying a cargo of about 20,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, has applied to the Port of Klaipėda for an opportunity to unload the cargo here and carry out repairs in the dock of one of the ship repair companies operating in the port,” he said.

“We would like to stress that we are currently assessing all the circumstances carefully. A decision on whether to allow the ship to enter the Port of Klaipėda will be taken in the near future,” Latakas added.

The news website Delfi was the first to report on the cargo ship situation on Wednesday.

According to the MarineTraffic website, the Ruby sailed from the Russian city of Kandalaksha on August 22 and was off the Norwegian port of Tromsø on September 1.

“The cargo ship was damaged in a storm, with damage to its propeller, hull, and rudder,” reported the Barents Observer.

The Ruby’s target is said to be Gran Canaria in the Spanish Canary Islands. The cargo ship’s crew consists of 19 people, mostly from Syria.
