Lithuanian MFA denies favouritism as ministers’s assistants get diplomatic ranks

BNS 2024.08.30 13:41

The first secretary and an assistant of Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis have become diplomatic attachés, Delfi.lt has reported.

According to the report, a man identified as L.K. became Landsbergis’ first secretary when he was appointed foreign minister in late 2020. L.K. previously worked as a project manager in the TS-LKD party that Landsbergis leads.

In April this year, he announced that he would take up the post of attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Meanwhile, a woman identified as S.S., who had been Landsbergis’ secretary since June 2021, was also appointed as attaché last year.

Attaché is the lowest diplomatic rank and is granted by order of the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The Foreign Ministry told Delfi.lt that both L.K. and S.S. got the diplomatic rank by winning open competitions.

According to the Ministry, the competition for the diplomatic service is organised by the responsible department within it. It involves a commission composed of an employee representative, experienced diplomats, personnel managers and a lawyer.

The commission considers the results of the competition and makes recommendations to the minister on whom to award fixed-term contracts and grant diplomatic ranks.
