An apartment in Lithuania’s resort city of Palanga caught fire on Wednesday evening, possibly due to the explosion of an electric scooter battery.

“At around 22:00, a call was received that a fire had broken out in one of the apartments. When the firefighters arrived, the fire had already spread,” said Aurelija Maslauskienė, chief specialist of the Klaipėda Fire Rescue Board.

“The investigation established that the fire was possibly caused by an electric scooter which was being charged. Of course, the investigation is ongoing and new circumstances may emerge, but this is the initial version,” she added.

According to her, there were people in the apartment at the time of the explosion, but they avoided injuries, as they were in another room. The fire has caused serious damage to the apartment and the building.

“Electrical wiring or improper use of electrical appliances is one of the most common causes of fires, and when it comes to electric scooters, it is quite common,” Maslauskienė said.

“Often the wrong chargers are used, and the lithium battery is not properly charged. We recommend that people contact the service staff and listen to their recommendations,” she added.
