On Thursday, the Lithuanian parliament Seimas approved Brigadier General Raimundas Vaikšnoras as Lithuania’s chief of defence.

All 110 members of the Seimas present at the sitting voted in favour of appointing Vaikšnoras as Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces for a five-year term.

Vaikšnoras will be replacing General Valdemaras Rupšys, whose term as Lithuania’s chief of defence ends on July 23.

According to the constitution, the president appoints and dismisses the chief of defence with the parliament’s approval. In Lithuania, the chief of defence is appointed for five years.

Vaikšnoras is currently serving as deputy chief of staff for military training at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).

He has in the past served as commander of the Lithuanian Land Force, the force’s deputy chief of staff for operations, chief of the Operations Department of the Defence Staff, and commander of the Iron Wolf brigade.
