According to some Lithuanian political analysts, it is no accident that President Obama invited the Baltic leaders at this time, stressing that he might have certain reasons for the meeting.

According to the daily ‘Kauno diena’, only Washington truly knows why the leaders of three Baltic States were invited by President Obama to meet on 30 August, 2013. One of the possible pretexts is Lithuania’s presidency over the EU Council.

The press release issued by the President’s Press Service mentions that this year marks 15 years since the signing of the US-Baltic Charter of Partnership. However, according to political analysts Kęstutis Girnius and Česlovas Iškauskas, the US president might have other reasons for inviting the Baltic leaders.

According to the analysts, Barack Obama, first of all, is going to mitigate the effects of the recent spying scandal caused by the revelations of former US intelligence officer Edward Snowden.

While most of the European countries reacted quite angrily at the news of US spying on their internet data, the Baltic States behaved in a rather reserved manner. Thus, Girnius thinks, that by demonstrating attention to the Baltics, the US is trying to improve their international prestige.

“Barack Obama and America need to start talking to those countries that are more eager to support the US. The Baltic States are exactly those countries that treat the US spying attempts complaisantly, because they know that Russia is doing similar things no less frequently, and that it is necessary under current conditions,” said Girnius.

Political scientist Iškauskas thinks that the meeting in Washington should not be overemphasised, and maintains that the reason of the meeting is Lithuania’s EU presidency and the EU Eastern Partnership programme.
