Algirdas Švanys, who abducted his daughter and fled to Russia’s exclave of Kaliningrad in August, has been stripped of his Lithuanian citizenship.

Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė took the decision after it turned out that Švanys also has Russian citizenship.

The existing Lithuanian laws do not allow people who have acquired citizenship of another country to maintain their Lithuanian passport.

On August 27, Švanys took his daughter and crossed the Russian border from Lithuania using an inflatable boat. On that day, the child's mother contacted the police and reported that Švanys had failed to return her at the agreed time.

The child was returned to her mother on September 5 when she went to Kaliningrad. The two returned to Lithuania on the same day.
