The goal of a common energy policy is to ensure Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy supply for Europe, Energy Ministry writes.
This was stressed by the Minister of Energy Jaroslav Neverovič during his speech at the Lithuanian TEPSA Pre-Presidency conference which was held at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania today.
Minister Neverovič presented Lithuanian energy priorities during Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and discussed the progress and challenges of the common European energy policy with the policy experts.
“The first goal of the EU is to establish a competitive, integrated and interconnected internal energy market. The second goal is to ensure a secure energy supply by implementing common external EU energy policy. The final goal is to make a transition to a low carbon economy,” said the Minister of Energy.
According to Neverovič, current common EU energy policy was formed in relatively short period, i.e. 7-8 years. However a lot of decisions concerning energy policy are still made at the national level.
“Fully interconnected Europe with well-developed energy infrastructure and harmonised regulation will become a stronger player in the global energy sector. We have to admit that although a great progress was made over a relatively short time period, we should continue without losing pace. And this progress in policy at European level requires voluntary cooperation by Member States while being aware of the common policy benefits,” said Neverovič.
The Minister stressed that energy issues, especially the completion of the EU internal energy market and strengthening of the external dimension of the EU energy policy are among the most important Lithuanian Presidency’s priorities.
The event gathered top-ranking Lithuanian officials and politicians responsible for the presidency, EU institution representatives and leading experts on European policy.
The Conference is organized by Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA), Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University (IIRPS VU) and European Integration Studies Centre (Vilnius).
