More than 2,000 teachers and other education workers are continuing their strike in Lithuania on Monday, according to the National Education Agency.

Reports of participation in the industrial action had been received from 133 educational establishments. They account for 6.34 per cent of all educational establishments in Lithuania.

In total, 2,329 teachers are reported to be on strike. The highest numbers of strike participants are reported in Klaipėda, Vilnius, Alytus, Panevėžys, and Kaišiadorys Districts.

The Lithuanian Education Employees’ Trade Union (LŠDPS) announced the strike after it failed to reach an agreement with the Education, Science and Sport Ministry on working conditions and faster pay raises for teachers.

The government proposes to increase teachers’ salaries by a total of 21 percent in two stages next year so that they reach 130 percent of the country’s average wage by the autumn of 2024.

Led by Andrius Navickas, the LŠDPS is not satisfied with the ministry’s proposals and wants a 20 percent pay rise now and another 30 percent from January. It also wants the number of schoolchildren in classrooms and teachers’ workload to be reduced and working conditions to be improved.
