Bolt taxi app in Lithuania separates drivers by language proficiency

Bolt, a popular ride-hailing app in Lithuania, will introduce a “Basic” category for drivers who use older cars and do not speak English or Lithuanian.

"We will apply stricter standards to communication and behaviour in the updated Bolt category, requiring that drivers communicate fluently with passengers in either Lithuanian or English. If this proves impossible, the driver will be able to continue in the Basic category,” Mantas Čižas, Bolt's PR manager, told the Elta news agency.

"As before, we will ask drivers who register on the platform with a foreign driving licence to provide a basic English language certificate, and periodically each driver will be required to identify themselves by taking a selfie,” he added.

The country’s authorities have previously considered imposing Lithuanian-language exams for drivers following complaints.

In recent months, the Lithuanian capital has seen a large influx of Russian-speaking drivers from Central Asian countries.
