Belarus would use nuclear weapons in case of “aggression”, the country’s authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko said on Thursday. Russia sent tactical nukes to Belarus in June. However, it’s unclear if they have already been transported to the country.
Russia sent tactical nukes to Belarus in June. However, it’s unclear if they have already been transported to the country.
In an interview with state news agency BelTa and cited by CNN, Lukashenko said “we didn’t bring nuclear weapons here in order to scare someone”.
“Yes, nuclear weapons represent a strong deterring factor. But these are tactical nuclear weapons, not strategic ones. This is why we will use them immediately once aggression is launched against us,” he added.
Although acknowledging the threat posed by the nuclear weapons in Belarus, Vilnius officials say nukes have already been stationed before in Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic coast bordering Poland and Lithuania.
