A Lithuanian man’s honeymoon trip to Indonesia ended in a terrible accident. Mindaugas Bernotas was admitted to a local hospital with multiple injuries and bone fractures after a tree fell on him.
According to Bernotas’ family, he underwent spinal and chest surgery on Tuesday.
“The young family was struck by misfortune on their honeymoon while travelling around the Indonesian islands. On the island of Gili Air, a tree fell on Mindaugas while he was on his way back to his hotel after dinner,” the family’s statement reads.
The man was taken to a hospital on the nearby island of Lambok with multiple injuries, including a fractured spine, broken ribs, fractures in both legs, and punctured lungs.
“The situation in the first days after the accident was particularly complicated by the lack of blood. Mindaugas has type A- blood, which is extremely rare in Asia. Thanks to the quick response of the people involved, there has been enough blood collected, but it may still be needed in the future,” Bernotas’ family said.
The man had no travel insurance, so all the medical expenses must be covered by the family. He still has several other surgeries, a journey back home, and rehabilitation ahead of him.
According to the family, the amount of the treatment is much more than they can afford to pay, so they are appealing for help.
The family has set up the “Mindaugas Bernotas Relief and Charity Fund” to collect donations. All people and organisations who are willing and able to support Bernotas are asked to transfer the money to the fund’s account.
