Lithuania reintroduces border checks ahead of NATO summit

Border control measures have been introduced on Friday and will remain in place for six days as Lithuania is ramping up security for the NATO summit in Vilnius next week.

Checks at border checkpoints at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports, Klaipėda seaport and the border with Poland and Latvia will be carried out from 08:00 on Friday until 08:00 on Thursday, July 13.

Travellers crossing internal EU borders will have to present a valid travel document, such as an ID card, while third-country nationals must have passports and visas, if required, or other documents authorising entry to the Schengen countries, such as temporary or permanent residence permits.

The Ministry of the Interior has said that, depending on the situation and potential threats, checks will be carried out on a random basis at any time of the day.

Temporary checkpoints have been set up on the main roads to Poland and Latvia.

Customs officers as well as Latvian and Polish border guards will be deployed for checks at the internal EU borders, while the Lithuanian Armed Forces, members of the Lithuanian Riflemen Union as well as Estonian and Moldovan border guards and additional forces from FRONTEX will assist in guarding external borders with Russia and Belarus.

While Schengen countries have abolished internal border controls, each country may temporarily reintroduce controls as part of security measures.

The NATO Summit in Vilnius will take place on July 11–12. This is the first time that Lithuania is hosting this event.
