Lithuanian police will not investigate sexual assault allegations at Rammstein concert

Lithuanian police have confirmed to LRT.lt that no investigation will be launched into sexual assault allegations against Rammstein’s Till Lindemann during a recent concert in Vilnius.

The news that the Lithuanian police will not investigate the allegations was reported by German media on Wednesday. The reports said that the Lithuanian police dropped the investigation, and the alleged victim, who has accused Lindeman of spiking her drink and sexually assaulting her, issued an official complaint over the decision.

The Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat specified to LRT.lt, however, that the investigation was not dropped, but rather the police decided not to open one.

“In the absence of a criminal element, a decision was taken not to open a pre-trial investigation (not one to terminate it),” the police said in a written comment.

The final decision will be taken by the prosecutor’s office, it added: “The investigation can always be reopened if new circumstances emerge.”

After the allegations were made following a Rammstein concert in May, the Lithuanian police have been criticised for failing to administer a drug test and properly respond to reports of sexual violence and drug intoxication.

Meanwhile, the German media announced on Wednesday that the Berlin public prosecutor’s office would launch an investigation into the allegations.

The scandal over the Rammstein singer’s allegedly inappropriate behaviour erupted after a concert in Vilnius in May.

An Irish woman posted on social media that she had been invited backstage, where Lindemann had sex with her, possibly after having intoxicated her with spiked drinks. More similar testimonies appeared in the German media subsequently.

Lindemann’s lawyers have rejected the accusations, calling them “without exception false”.
