BNS 2023.06.12 15:40

Lithuanian authorities have accepted the asylum request of the former Russian air force pilot, Dmitry Mishov, who fled to the Baltic states.

"He has been accommodated at one of the units of the State Border Guard Service," Giedrius Mišutis, spokesman for the border guards, told BNS on Saturday.

"He is under an officer's supervision, and the standard asylum application procedure is ongoing," he said.

Speaking on Friday, Lithuanian Interior Vice Minister Arnoldas Abramavičius said the Russian national might have entered Lithuania from Poland or Latvia.

Abramavičius said the Russian national fleeing to Lithuania could be “a provocation”.

"He might have links with Russian opposition organisations, it could be a provocation, and we also do not rule it out because the timing is very purposeful as the NATO summit is coming closer," he said.

Lithuania’s intelligence service, the State Security Department (VSD), previously told BNS it has information about the Russian citizen, but would not disclose it.

Last week, BBC News Russian reported that Mishov fled to Lithuania in late May, In an interview with the publication, Mishov said he was a helicopter pilot and did not want to participate in the invasion of Ukraine.
