Belarusian authorities have offered firearms to migrants attempting to cross the border irregularly, according to the Latvian border guards.
"Of course, such incidents increase the risks, security risks, and can escalate to shootouts," Guntis Pujāts, chief of the Latvian State Border Guard, told the LETA news agency.
The migrants refused to accept weapons, according to the Latvian border guards. The incidents were recorded last year, with no new such cases in the past months.
Latvia has seen 3,793 people attempting to cross the border irregularly after the Minsk regime began channelling migrants to the border with Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
Baltic and European officials call it an attack by Belarus in response to sanctions which were put in place following the regime’s violent crackdown on the opposition.
