Denmark will deploy a battalion of between 700 and 1,200 troops to the Baltic states after withdrawing troops from Iraq, the country’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said on Tuesday.
The battalion will be sent to Latvia for four to six months annually, spending the rest of the time in Denmark, according to a report by Reuters. While based in Denmark, the force will be ready to deploy to the Baltics in case of a crisis.
“We must be prepared for the Danish presence in the Baltics to be long-term, and there is a need for balancing between having soldiers on the ground and being ready to deploy them from Denmark,” Poulsen said.
The minister also said that Copenhagen was ready to donate military equipment and provide financial support to Ukraine to the tune of 1.7 billion Danish crowns (228 million euros).
According to Paulson, Denmark will reduce its military presence in Iraq starting in early-2024.
