Lithuania’s population may shrink by one-third, to 1.78 million people, by 2100, according to the latest population projections issued by Eurostat.
Lithuania is currently home to 2.81 million people, based on the latest census data.
According to the projections, Lithuania’s population will decrease to 2 million by 2070 and will shrink further, to 1.85 million people, by 2085.
As estimated by Eurostat, the European Union’s (EU) population will decrease by 6 percent between January 1, 2022, and January 1, 2100, or 27.3 million people, to 420 million, from current 447 million.
After a decrease in 2020 and 2021 due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the population of the EU started recovering during the course of 2022, the EU’s statistical office said in a press release.
As a consequence of the influx of refugees from Ukraine into the EU following Russia’s invasion in early 2022, the EU population is estimated to have reached 451 million on January 1, 2023.
Furthermore, the EU’s population is projected to peak at 453 million people in 2026, before decreasing to a projected level of 420 million in 2100.
The estimates are based on assumptions of partial convergence of fertility fertility, mortality, and migration patterns across EU countries.
