European tram manufacturers are looking forward to the international competition in Vilnius, The Baltic Course has informed, referring to the news agency ELTA and the daily ‘Lietuvos rytas’.

It has been reported that in 2012 Vilnius municipality decided that the first tram line will connect the city centre and Santariškės.

Already in 2013, the tender will be published and the first passengers will be transferred in 2016. Vilnius City Mayor Artūras Zuokas said that Vilnius deserves a tram.

Zuokas has received not only support, but also criticism and derision regarding this project. However, European manufacturers took Vilnius ambitions seriously.

Representatives of the largest companies said that they were absolutely willing to attend the tender.

“We are very interested in a tender in Vilnius. Many cities in Europe intend to build the first tramway line. Therefore Lithuanian capital in this case is not something exceptional,” said one of the largest manufacturers of trams in Europe – the head of France’s ‘Alstom Strategy’, Loic Dubois.
