The Lithuanian government on Thursday approved legislative amendments paving the way for establishing a National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC).
The centre will function as a structural unit of the Government’s Office and will become the major operational-level institution engaged in the management of crises and emergencies, the government said in a press release.
The structure of the NKVC will include a situation centre, which will operate on a 24/7 basis and will continuously monitor the threats to Lithuania’s national security interests.
In case of a crisis or an emergency, the NKVC will ensure the management of these situations and will also coordinate the prevention of national security threats and the activity of state reserve managers, as well as strategic communication about national security.
According to the press release, the NKVC will also be tasked to ensure the activities of a National Security Commission and coordinate the mobilisation of non-governmental organisations and volunteers at the national level.
The centre will also organise national and international-level crises and emergency management exercises.
