The first group of German and Belgian troops arrived in Lithuania, on Tuesday, to coordinate deployment of the 1200-strong NATO unit.

A group of German officers landed in capital Vilnius to coordinate the deployment of a 1,200-strong battalion that will include forces from several NATO members.

Hours earlier, some 30 Belgian troops arrived at another airport in western Lithuania, while ship carrying logistical equipment docked at the Baltic Seaport of Klaipeda.

‘Their aim is to ensure redeployment of the battalion from Germany, Holland and Norway in Lithuania, Rukla military base,’ explained Lithuania’s military spokesman Andrius Dilda, while Belgians were unloading their military cargo in Klaipėda harbour.

Germany will lead the multi-national battalion in Lithuania.

According to a separate program, Lithuania also hosts American soldiers. Last week, Lithuania signed with the US a treaty clarifying the details on the American soldiers’ status.
