Lithuania has joined the COVAX worldwide vaccine sharing initiative and will donate 623,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses, the Health Ministry said.

"One of the most important lessons the Covid-19 pandemic teaches us is solidarity," Lithuanian Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys said in a press release.

"The coronavirus knows no borders and poses a threat to every country in the world, so the response must also be global and united," he added.

Some 235,700 vaccine doses donated by Lithuania are expected to reach Vietnam shortly.

The COVAX initiative, co-led by the vaccine alliance GAVI, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to ensure equal access to Covid-19 vaccines across the world.

Next year, the EU member states will donate around 500 million vaccine doses through COVAX to countries outside the bloc, the ministry said.

The total number of vaccine doses donated by countries around the world has already surpassed 1 billion.
