Visvaldas Morkevičius

Visvaldas Morkevičius is a versatile photographer of the young generation. He works with artistic documentary, fashion photography and portraits.

„10 Lietuvos fotografijos istorijų“. Visvaldas Morkevičius – įvairiapusiškas jaunosios kartos fotografas (su angl. subtitrais)

Morkevičius' images capture various subcultures, diverse characters and urban life.

In 2015, he published his first book, Public Secrets.

He started his career at a fashion house, but quickly rebelled against rules and glamour. After purchasing a lightweight automated camera, Morkevičius began capturing unadorned moments and imperfections of life.

Public Secrets came about when Morkevičius discovered an illegal strip club in the basement of his Vilnius apartment building and started making regular “photographic notes”.

The frenzy and fragments of parties captured in Morkevičius' photos give a sense of momentary release from the routine and boredom of everyday life.

At these parties, one can be one's authentic self and go beyond the society's strict limits. Here, chaos overtakes rationality.

Individual shots do not tell a clear story, so it is up to one's imagination to fill the gaps in between.

Morkevičius' photos do not have orderly compositions, they draw from the aesthetics of amateur photography. However, their totality is captivating, just like the city's nightlife itself.

These and other photographs by Visvaldas Morkevičius will be on display at MO Museum in the exhibition Celebrate for Change.
