Eurovision winner Jamala joined the commemorations of mass soviet deportations, on Tuesday in Vilnius.

‘By telling my story, I will become a part of your story’, said Jamala before her concert in the Vilnius Cathedral Square dedicated to the anniversary of mass deportations that soviets started on 14th June 1941, a year after they had occupied Lithuania and other Baltic countries.

Jamala won the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘1944’ that tells a story of Jamala’s great grandmother who experienced soviet deportation of the Crimean Tatars. She performed the song late in the evening, in the Cathedral Square.

On Tuesday’s morning, Jamala met President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė.

Based on the data of the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania (LGGRTC), more than 280,000 people were deported from Lithuania, in the period from 1941 to 1953.

Lithuanians attending the commemorative events observed a minute of silence, while deportees and their children shared their stories.

The Parliament held a Solemn Commemoration, during which a symbolic flag was handed over to the young people who every year travel to Siberia to repair the graves of deportees and visit those who did not return to Lithuania.

JAMALA, winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016:
By telling my story I will become a part of your story. The song called ‘1944’ tells a story about my family, my great grandmother, who experienced deportation in 1944.  So, the forthcoming concert is particularly important to me, and I feel honoured.

I remember the tears of my parents when they said in the morning that we should prepare to leave for Siberia. I was a fourth-grader back then, and we had no idea what the Siberia was.
