Cardinal Pietro Parolin encouraged Lithuanians not to be afraid of migrants, on Monday as he met President Dalia Grybauskaitė, within the framework of his three day visit in Lithuania.

‘Spinter‘ survey ordered last year in October by the Delfi News showed that 61.3 percent of Lithuanians do not agree to accept migrants. Lithuania assumed obligation to accept slightly over 1000 refugees under the EU quota, but the majority of them are still to come.

Cardinal Parolin reminded about the Pope’s visit in Lesbo Island where he urged people not to be afraid of migrants.

The second officer only to Pope Francis in the Vatican, on Sunday celebrated a mass at the central square in the capital Vilnius, which hosted the Congress of Mercy for believers.

Mercy is the official Vatican‘s theme of the Holy Year, which runs until the end of November.

77 percent of the three-million Lithuania’s population associate themselves with the Roman Catholic Church, and the President Grybauskaitė has invited Pope Francis to visit our country in 2018, when it will be celebrating the centenary of its first restored statehood.

Cardinal PIETRO PAROLIN, Vatican’s Secretary of State:

You know the point of view of the church. The church as the Pope said in Lesbo when he was there visiting the migrants in Greece, he said that the church took seriously the fear of the people, we know that there is, but at the same time we have to repeat what Jesus said to his apostles many times – don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid.
