Fluctuations in some Covid-19 indicators do not signal the beginning of the third wave of the pandemic, Lithuania's National Public Health Centre (NVSC) said on Monday.
They responded to an earlier statement from Statistics Lithuania that the county may be entering the third wave of the pandemic.
“In specialists' opinion, despite fluctuations in certain epidemiological indicators, it is still a continuation of the second wave,” the NVSC said in a comment to BNS.
According to Statics Lithuania, the daily number of new coronavirus cases has stopped falling and the share of positive tests has been growing for a week now. This, it noted, resembles trends in October, the start of the second wave of the pandemic.
The NVSC says, however, that the recent decline in new infections could be due to “a decrease in laboratory testing”, adding that “the situation should be looked at with caution”.
Lithuania's 14-day coronavirus infection rate currently stands at 242.9 per 100,000 people. The share of positive tests over the past seven days now stands at 7.8 percent.
Overall, 194,333 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Lithuania since the start of the pandemic.
