The commander of the US warship buzzed by Russian attack jets in the Baltic Sea said the US Navy will not cede space to Russian forces in the Baltic.

He said the US destroyer was designed to combat this kind of threat and he reiterated that the Navy is happy to visit Lithuania and that they will continue to co-operate with allies and will not cede space.

Around the time of the Donald Cook incident, the three Russian helicopters violated Lithuania’s airspace from Kaliningrad, according to Lithuanian border guards.

Commander CHARLES E. HAMPTON, Chief of USS Donald Cook ship:
The objection from the US Navy on a Russian military activity and conduct is not about fear. It's about safe and professional behaviour at sea between militaries in international waters and airspace.

Commander CHARLES E. HAMPTON, Chief of USS Donald Cook ship:
The ship is designed to detect and track contacts such as this, aircraft such as this, from up to several hundred miles away. So again, it is right in line with our training and our scenarios that we practise on a regular basis.
