Lithuania confirmed 62 new coronavirus cases over Wednesday, the biggest daily increase since the the peak in mid-April.
In all, Lithuania has 3,504 confirmed Covid-19 cases. At the moment, 1,254 are active cases – the biggest number so far – while 2,149 people have recovered.
Eighty-seven people have died of Covid-19 in the country so far.
At the moment, 8,081 people are in isolation. The number includes active cases, their close contacts and travellers who are required to self-quarantine upon arriving in Lithuania.
Outbreak at hospital
A hospital in the northern Lithuanian town of Radviliškis has confirmed eight cases of Covid-19.
“The infection has been diagnosed to seven staff members and one patient,” Vaidas Smalinskas, the hospital's director, told BNS on Wednesday evening.
Six of the infected staff members work at the hospital's nursing and supportive care unit and one at the admission and emergency unit, he said.
Three persons tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday and five on Wednesday.
One of the nursing care specialists and the patient were the first to develop symptoms.
“We are currently testing all hospital staff and patients,” Smalinskas said.
The National Public Health Centre said 30 staff members and around 40 patients could have been in contact with the infected people.
4 infections during travel
Four of the new cases are travelers who were diagnosed with Covid-19 after returning from foreign trips to Germany, the US, Nigeria and Norway.
Eight of the new cases have been linked to an outbreak at a police station in Raseiniai, western Lithuania, which currently accounts for 26 Covid-19 cases. One of the people diagnosed on Tuesday is a student at a local school. Seventeen of his or her classmates have been instructed to self-isolate.
Another three cases are linked to the Gabija Progymnasium in Vilnius. One of them is a teacher, the other two are family members of students previously diagnosed with the virus.
Five new clusters of infection have been identified on Wednesday, according to the National Public Health Centre (NVSC).
One of them is a gym in Vilnius (Gym Plius, Kalvarijų Street 88). A person, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Wednesday, had physical contact with a trainer during a group workout. Sixteen other high-risk contacts have been instructed to self-isolate.
One case has been linked to a bar in central Vilnius which has not been named by the NVSC. One employee was diagnosed on September 13, while the second case was confirmed on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, 17 cases could not be traced to any known sources.
