The planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea should not be built, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė said on Thursday before leaving for an EU Council meeting.

"Lithuania and six other countries addressed the European Commission, asking to look into whether this pipeline does not contradict the Energy Union [...] and the EU's interests in areas of transparency and solidarity, whether it meets the Third Energy Package requirements. So I believe there are many questions to ask and before the are answers, this project should not move forward," Grybauskaitė told LRT radio.

In September, Russia's state-owned gas behemoth Gazprom and five European companies signed an agreement on the €10 billion Nord Stream project which includes building two additional pipelines under the Baltic sea. It would increase gas volumes delivered from Russia straingt to Germany.
