Diesel fuel was spilled in the waters of the Lithuanian seaport of Klaipėda on Sunday, according to the preliminary results of the Environmental Protection Agency's investigation into the pollution incident.

A cleanup operation involving the Navy, border guards and the Fire and Rescue Service was launched after a stain of oil products was spotted in the port's waters early on Sunday.

Water samples were taken at three locations – in the port's waters and at Melnragė beaches, the Agency said on Tuesday.

Additional samples of water and sand will be taken at Melnragė, Giruliai, Karklė, Palanga and Smiltynė, with the results expected to be available later this week.
