The Liberal Movement political group in the Lithuanian parliament has proposed to boost funding for counter-terrorism effort by additional EUR 15 million starting in 2016.

The Liberal Movement political group in the Lithuanian parliament has proposed to boost funding for counter-terrorism effort by additional EUR 15 million starting in 2016.

Based on the proposed amendment to the 2016 state budget and municipal budgets which was registered on Tuesday, the State Security Department (VSD) and the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) would receive respectively EUR 10 million and EUR 5 million in additional appropriations.

"The threat of terrorism has clearly increased in Europe recently. Lithuania cannot act as if nothing is happening. Therefore, it is crucial to provide appropriate funding not only for national defence but also to agencies responsible for counter-terrorism. We need strong armed forces and modern weaponry, but we also need actually operating services and intelligence officers who can combat terrorism," said Kęstutis Glaveckas, member of the Liberal Movement political group in the Seimas and Deputy Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Budget and Finance.
