The conservative Homeland Union, Lithuania’s biggest opposition party, has announced its final electoral list for October’s parliamentary election.

MP Ingrida Šimonyte, the former presidential candidate, topped the list, which was approved by the Homeland Union’s council on Saturday. Gabrielius Landsbergis, the party leader, was ranked second.

Laurynas Kasčiūnas, a right-wing member of parliament, who received the most votes in the internal party vote at the beginning of July to the surprise of more liberal party leadership, kept his third spot on the list.

After the party-wide vote, the list was corrected by Šimonytė and Landsbergis, who put three female candidates at the top.

Kaunas Technological University‘s rector Jurgita Šiugždinienė, former Member of European Parliament Laima Andrikienė, and Lithuanian parliament member Aistė Gedvilienė were placed among the top 20 candidates.

“I wanted our list and our future parliamentary group to be as similar as possible to our society,” Šimonytė said, explaining the decision. “Men and women each make up half of our society, so I wanted to include as many women on the top 20 list as the rules allow me to.”
