Coronavirus: Lithuania confirms 3 new cases, steps up testing in select areas

Three new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Lithuania over Sunday, bringing the country's total count to 1,801, the Health Ministry reported on Monday.

There are currently 240 active cases, while 1,475 people have recovered.

Seventy-six people have died of Covid-19 in the country so far, and another ten coronavirus-infected patients have died from other causes.

Since June 1, Lithuania has recorded 21 coronavirus infections contracted abroad.

On Sunday, 1,912 people were tested for Covid-19 in Lithuania.

More testing in 7 municipalities

This week, Lithuania is planning to step up coronavirus testing in seven municipalities: Širvintos, Vilnius District, Jonava, Vilnius City, Šalčininkai, Radviliškis and Klaipėda District.

Infection rates in these municipalities have been higher than in the rest of the country.

The national coronavirus morbidity rate is 3.6 cases per 100,000 population, the Health Ministry said.

Testing will be stepped up in municipalities with infection rates above the national average and with more than one Covid-19 case confirmed over the last 14 days.

At the moment, the municipalities that match the criteria include Širvintos (66.3), Vilnius District (21), Jonava (9.7), Vilnius City (8.0), Šalčininkai (6.6), Radviliškis (5.7) and Klaipėda District (5.0).

Staff of all healthcare institutions and care homes, except care homes for children, in these municipalities will be tested this week.
