A team of Lithuanian medical volunteers will travel to Armenia in June to help combat the pandemic.

Eight medical workers, a logistics specialist and an operations manager will spend two weeks in Armenia, Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius told BNS on Wednesday.

Armenia “is in a very difficult situation”, said Linkevičius. “People are queuing to be admitted to hospitals and intensive care wards [due to] a lack of beds and medical personnel.”

"They have appealed to EU institutions and to the [Lithuanian] government. Some countries are helping, some are trying to have serious patients brought to them for treatment and some are trying to help by sending doctors there," he added.

Armenia said last week that its hospitals were unable to cope with an influx of coronavirus patients.

Based on the latest figures, the country has so far confirmed over 14,100 Covid-19 infections and 227 deaths.
