Election body considers how to make Lithuania's vote safer

As Lithuania is gearing towards a general election in October, the country's Central Electoral Commission (VRK) is considering measures for safe voting, should the coronavirus epidemic persist until then.

Extended voting hours and supplying election commissions with personal protective equipment are among the proposed measures, VRK chairwoman Laura Matjošaitytė said.

She discussed the election organisation with President Gitanas Nausėda during a conference call on Thursday, which also involved NGO representatives and political scientists.

“There's a proposal to extend voting from home to four days – Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There's also a proposal to let voters who fall into the risk group, under the health minister's order, to vote at home,” Matjošaitytė told BNS.

“Another proposal is to extend the voting time on the voting day until 22:00,” she added.

The proposals have been drafted by the Justice Ministry, she said.

Lithuania will hold a general election on October 11.
