Woman with Covid-19 gives birth in Vilnius hospital

A coronavirus-infected woman gave birth to a child in a Vilnius hospital on Tuesday.

The baby was born in Santara Clinics in Vilnius. Both the mother and the baby feel fine, Lithuanian Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga told reporters at the parliament.

The woman was diagnosed with Covid-19 when she came to give birth to Vilnius Maternity Hospital, sources told LRT.lt. She was subsequently moved to Santara Clinics, one of the hospitals treating coronavirus patients.

According to Veryga, the hospital took all safety measures. The mother and the baby are being cared for separately, he added.

The baby will be tested for Covid-19 on Wednesday, according to LRT.lt sources.

They also said that the mother would be allowed to breastfeed the child, as per international recommendations, but would need to wear a facemask.

Reportedly, the woman does not exhibit any coronavirus symptoms.
