Hospital in Lithuania's Klaipėda under investigation due to safety violations

Prosecutors in Lithuania's port city of Klaipėda said on Friday they had launched a pre-trial investigation into violations at Klaipeda University Hospital.

Most of Klaipėda University Hospital was closed last week following safety breaches in handling Covid-19 patients. Violations of safety rules at the hospital had been reported by medical workers' unions, according to Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga.

A letter from medics at Klaipėda University Hospital previously sent to alleged the administration told them to lie about having enough facemasks and respirators and would not share information about infections among hospital staff.

Klaipėda University Hospital is one of the five main institutions in Lithuania treating Covid-19 patients.

The probe launched on Friday centers on the possible violations on fighting epidemics, as well as the requirements to ensure workers' health safety, and also failure to carry out official duties.

Prosecutors will try to identify the reasons behind the spread of coronavirus at the hospital, and also persons responsible for the implementation of legal requirements.

The prosecution service underlined that the pre-trial investigation was not launched into the actions of a specific person. There are no suspects in the pre-trial investigation.
