Lithuanian president sets general election for October

BNS2020.04.09 13:14

Lithuania's parliamentary elections will take place on October 11, according to a decree signed by President Gitanas Nausėda on Thursday.

“The start of the political campaign will be unusual this time – amid strict restrictions applied to mass gatherings and events," the president said in a press release.

"However, its further course will largely depend on our progress in containing the spread of the coronavirus. I believe that the general elections in fall will take place as normal,” said Nausėda.

The Central Electoral Commission would face a historic challenge to ensure a smooth process of holding the elections under the present unusual circumstances, he added wishing the panel every success.

Under the law, the date of general elections is to be announced no later than six months before the expiry of the four-year mandate of the current parliament.
