A hospital in Klaipėda, Lithuania's third biggest city, has been closed following reports about safety violations in dealing with coronavirus infections.
Klaipėda University Hospital is one of the hotspots of Covid-19 where 58 patients with the disease were being treated on Friday. As of Sunday, all of the hospital's wards except Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, and Infectious Diseases had been closed, the Ministry of Health said.
Violations of safety rules at the hospital had been reported by medical workers' unions, Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga had said previously. He had also appointed a temporary commission to advise the institution on infection control.
The hospital's staff had been complaining about shortages of protective equipment and not being informed about coronavirus infections.
A letter from medics at Klaipėda University Hospital sent to LRT.lt on Friday alleged the administration told them to lie about having enough facemasks and respirators and would not share information about infections among hospital staff.
Klaipėda University Hospital is one of the five main institutions in Lithuania treating Covid-19 patients.
Several people have been reported to have contracted the virus in the hospital. Three patients with eye conditions who had been treated at its Ophthalmology Clinic have died.
