Sixty-eight people tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday in Lithuania, the Ministry of Health said. In all, there are 649 confirmed coronavirus cases. A ninth virus-related death was reported on Thursday.
So far, eight people have died from the disease in Lithuania, seven have recovered.
Lithuania carried out 2,444 coronavirus tests over Wednesday, more than during any other one day until now. In all, 15,635 tests have been done since the beginning of the epidemic.
Ninth reported death
A man from Lithuania's northern town of Ukmergė has died of the coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to nine, Rolanda Lingienė, the head of Vilnius Department of the National Public Health Centre, confirmed to BNS.
“We have information about one more death of the Covid-19 infection, the man died at home and tests were carried out after death. Based on our initial information, he was not treated in hospital, but his relative was in hospital in March,” Lingienė said.
The deceased was an elderly man, she added, and belonged to the category of people particularly vulnerable to the disease.
A total of nine people have died of the coronavirus in Lithuania, including six in Ukmergė.
Share of positive results on decrease
Recent infection numbers appear to indicate a decline in the percentage of samples testing positive for the virus, the head of the government's coronavirus communication group said.
“We have a new record today – 2,444 samples tested in the past 24 hours,” Giedrius Surplys said at a news conference on Thursday.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases reached a new daily high, too, but the number of positive cases relative to the total number of tests fell considerably, according to him.
“Sixty-eight new cases of infection were diagnosed yesterday – a number we had only had on March 24,” the spokesman said. “However, I'd like to draw your attention to the fact that in percentage terms, only 2.7 percent of those tested yesterday are ill with Covid-19.”
“The peak was on March 22, when 14 percent of all tests in Lithuania came back positive,” he added. “Around that date, the percentage hovered at around 9-10 percent daily.”
Statistics for the past few days appear to show that the percentage of positive cases has been on the decline, Surplys said, adding that healthcare professionals will release their conclusions and an analysis of several scenarios on Friday.
Ten patients in intensive care
A total of 125 coronavirus patients are undergoing treatment in Lithuania's hospitals and ten of them are in intensive care, the country's Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga told reporters on Thursday.
"Four are on lung ventilators," he said, adding that another 34 are being administered oxygen but are not in intensive care.
