France's Russia envoy to visit Lithuania for consultations

French president's envoy for strategic dialogue with Russia is expected to come to Lithuania for consultations this month. 

Pierre Vimont is to visit Vilnius on February 27, diplomatic sources told BNS.

In late 2019, French President Emmanuel Macron tasked the experienced French diplomat with working on re-establishing a strategic dialogue between Europe and Russia.

Lithuania disagreed with France, and instead called to isolate Russia until it changes its aggressive behavior in neighboring countries and in the Middle East.

Asta Skaisgirytė, an adviser to the Lithuanian president, previously crticised France's decision to appoint the envoy to Russia, and said ti doesn't reflect the EU position.

It only makes sense to talk with Russia if the goal is to "get Russia back onto the path of international law" and make it "withdraw its troops from the occupied, annexed territories," she said in November 2019.
