China is a new global player overshadowing Russia as “a regional risk which Europeans have to deal with themselves,” Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid said on Sunday.

“In that sense, French President Emmanuel Macron is right that Europe itself must be able to speak from a strong position with Russia, the Estonian president told ERR during the Munich Security Conference on Sunday.

Kaljulaid also said that “we've been talking for years here in Munich about how Russia is trying to tear our societies apart, but maybe today we need to talk more about what we ourselves do with our societies".

She also noted the diverging views on how rapidly the relations between Europe and Russia might be normalised, according to ERR.

The annual Munich Security Conference gathered state leaders and ministers to discuss upcoming security challenges.

Westernlessness, a gloomy topic of this year’s Munich conference, challenges the apparent loss of “common understanding of what it even means to be part of the West,” the chairman of the conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, was quoted by EurActiv.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said before the conference he would “remind the world leaders about the security situation and the threats in the Baltic region".
