The Lithuanian government has given a 50-percent increase to allowances for Lithuanian language teachers in Belarus, Poland and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
Education Minister Algirdas Monkevičius says the measure is aimed at bringing their salaries up to the level of their counterparts in Lithuania.

“In total, there are 64 of them: 46 in Belarus, eight in Poland and 13 in Kaliningrad, and their salaries are lower than those of teachers working in Lithuania,” he told the Cabinet on Wednesday.
Last year, Lithuania provided 1 million euros in allowances for Lithuanian language teachers abroad. The sum is to grow by more than 0.5 million euros this year, according to the minister.
Lithuanian language is taught in six general education schools and over 20 informal education establishments in Belarus, Poland and Kaliningrad.
